Arrival at Balticon 42

After staying up too late playing Savage Worlds (and then, admittedly, a little Grand Theft Auto) I managed to haul my ass out of bed and hit the roud, finally arriving at Balticon around 10:30. Now I’m hanging out in the lobby with Doug Rapsome, Mur Lafferty, Jared Axelrod, and a bunch of other folks … Read more

My tentative schedule at Balticon 42

I’m going to my first-ever science fiction convention this weekend as a travel south to Baltimore for Balticon 42. It seems strange that I could be as into scifi as I am, particularly books and novels, and never gone to a convention, but its never really been my scene. Generally speaking, if I’m going to … Read more

Radio Active #55: After GenCon, Podcamp Philly, MacQuest, Too Many Games

On this edition of Radio Active I’ve got some thoughts on GenCon 2007 and Podcamp Philly, catch folks up on what’s happening at Nuketown, try and figure out what it takes for me to buy a Mac, discover the BioShock soundtrack, stop by Vegas After Midnight. I also delve into the D&D Insider, contemplate the … Read more

202 lbs: The GenCon 6

So that plan I had for GenCon to hit the gym every morning before my games started? Yeah, that didn’t work out so well. Combined with 11 days of family vacation including lots of good food, but not a lot of hard exercise, GenCon saw me gain six pounds.

GenCon 2007, Day 4: Sundered Skies and Chessex Dice

As the morning sun shone on the final day of GenCon I arrived at my last game of the convention, a Savage Worlds game taking place in a post-apocalyptic fantasy setting called Sundered Skies. After liberating a dragon from the deathly bonds of necromancer, I returned to the exhibition hall to complete one final quest: … Read more

GenCon 2007, Day 3: Star Wars, Exhibit Hall, Savage Pirates, RPG Podcast Party, Mall Zombies

I woke up far too early on Saturday to get to an 8 a.m. Star Wars d20 game. The game let out early, which gave me time to wander the exhibit hall until exhaustion sent me retreating to my hotel room … only to be called back by a phone call from Erilar about a … Read more

GenCon 2007, Day 2: Battlestar Galactica, RPG Podcasters, Solomon Kane

Thursday’s D&D 4E buzz subsided by Friday morning, though a bunch of the special 4E t-shirts could be found in the convention hall. I will say there weren’t nearly as many as when 3E was announced in 1999, though admittedly the t-shirts for that edition were much, much cooler (listing all the major changes being … Read more

GenCon: Day 0

Sue dropped me off in Indianapolis at 1 p.m. after deftly navigating around “Janitors for Justice” protest just next to the Indy Hilton. They were protesting someone — not exactly sure who — for higher wages and healthcare benefits. After meeting up with fellow Blackrazors Cory and George, we checked into our rooms, hauling my … Read more

The GenCon Survival Pack

It’s been five years since I’ve been to GenCon. A lot has happened since then — the convention’s moved from Milwaukee to Indianapolis. I’ve had two kids. I’ve changed jobs. And I’ve found myself wanting to play games that aren’t Dungeons & Dragons. I’ll end up carrying about as many books as I did for … Read more
