The Geek Tree could easily be the “Star Trek” tree. Starships from the franchise’s television and cinematic runs dominate the tree, augmented by the occasional character-focused ornament.
The first Star Trek ornament – and the one most sought by collectors like myself – is the 1991 version of the Enterprise. Released to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, it sold out instantly. I’ve never been able to find a copy … but that doesn’t mean I have any shortage of Enterprises.
Today’s Ornament-a-Day entry is the Enterprise 1701-D from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Released in 1993, it’s a string-powered ornament whose deflector array glows red and whose warp nacelles shine blue and red. It has no audio component, but it doesn’t need it; the illumination is enough to make it stand out on the tree. It’s one of my favorite ornaments, and easily the flagship of my Star Trek fleet
